Official run Disney race costume rules
Before you start creating your runDisney running outfit, it’s important to get familiar with the runDisney costume rules. The rules will apply to all runDisney events. These runDisney events include the Disney Wine and Dine half marathon race weekends, Disney’s Princess half marathon, Disney marathon runDisney race weekends, Springtime Surprise, and the newly returned Disneyland half marathon race weekends.
The rules may vary slightly depending on the specific event, but generally, they require participants to follow guidelines that restrict full face masks and costumes that may obstruct vision or pose a tripping hazard. Additionally, there are guidelines regarding the use of props and accessories.
Here are the basics:
- No flags are allowed that are larger than 3′ x 5′
- No flag poles longer than 4′ or a greater diameter than 4″
- No metal flag poles
- No flag ends that are decorative or sharp, and no costumes that contain sharp or pointed objects
- Costumes must be family-friendly
- No weapons
- No costumes that drag on the ground
- No metal costumes with large infrastructure; they must follow the natural contour of the body
- No costumes that cover the face
- No capes below the waist (yes Edna we can wear capes…)
- No costumes with large props, inflatables, or structures that surround the whole body, or those that connect multiple participants together.
For the specific costume rules for the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend or any other official runDisney race, make sure to check the official runDisney website.
Ok, now that we have that out of the way, let’s get to the fun stuff- and don’t worry runDisney races are a lot of fun!
Disney Princess Running Costumes
So, do you want to proudly represent your favorite Disney princess on your next run Disney race? Let’s check out the best ways to plan your race day outfit!
1) Let’s start with the iconic Cinderella.
To represent Cindy start with a blue running skirt, a white running top (or the blue one pictured above), and glass slipper-inspired running shoes (I love these from New Balance- my favorite running shoe brand). Add the tiara and a pumpkin prop to complete the look.
These are awesome running shoes and the blue fade color is perfect for a Disney princess running costume like Cinderella or Elsa.
A great resource for this look is Sparkle Athletic (the skirt pictured above). I love this brand for sparkly skirts that are also super comfy and race-ready.
There are lots of places to find a great tank top for your runDisney event. Amazon, Crowned Athletics, Sparkle Athletic, Etsy and Gone for a Run are some of my favorites. But read on to see more!
2) An easy Disney Princess to “Disney Bound” for your runDisney event is Snow White.
Pick up a bright yellow running skirt, a blue running top, and a red bow headband. Add a red apple prop to complete the bound.
3) Be the Belle of the race
You could start with a yellow running skirt, a white running top, and a rose-inspired headband. You could also add a gold belt. Another idea for Belle is a blue skater dress with a white apron and carry a book prop.
Both of the Belle Disney Princess Running Costumes in the picture below can be found on Etsy, as can the headband.
Now that I’ve mentioned props a few times- keep in mind you have to carry it the entire race. Definitely do some practice runs to see if that prop is realistic for you for the entire run.
4) Dive into the race with an Ariel-inspired ensemble.
Wear teal running leggings, a purple seashell tank top, and a seashell headband. Leggings are perfect for Ariel (they look the most like fins right) and those early morning races can get pretty chilly. Check out crowned athletics mermaid princess leggings and this tank top and sea star headband from Amazon to complete the look.
These headbands are so cute and comfy and they make a great addition to an Ariel runDisney costume!
This tank top is comfortable, not too tight and it breathes well- perfect to bring out your inner Ariel.
5) Channel the spunky Anna from Frozen
Start with a complete Princess Anna running costume and a braided hairdo. Add a touch of warmth with a cape-like running jacket, this would be a great layer for the cold mornings.
6) Let it go and embrace your inner ice queen with an Elsa-inspired costume.
Check out this ice queen running bundle by Gone for a Run. This has everything you need to complete the look- a sparkly snowflake tutu, tank top, and Elsa crown headband!
7) Be brave like Merida
Start with a fun skater dress or these fun capri leggings that have all of the Merida touches, and a wild red wig. Complete the look with a bow and arrow prop, again, if you think you can carry it for all of the runDisney magical miles!
If you are adding a wig to your runDisney costume also be sure that it is comfortable and securely attached. Wigs can keep your head warm if it’s a cold morning but they can get awfully hot after the sun kicks in. Another alternative is to use a fun temporary hair color.
This is the wig I used for Merida. I wouldn't recommend it for a long race but it was fine for a short race and/or even for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.
8) Bring the magic of the bayou to your race with a Tiana-inspired costume.
You could go with the classic green tutu or running skirt and a green sports bra. Or you could try the flapper look- check out this pin for some fun inspiration. Either way, add a little sparkle with fancy green running shoes.
9) Pretend you have magical hair and go all in on a Rapunzel inspired costume.
The colors for Rapunzel are easy to find too- lavender and pink, with a touch of gold for the lanterns and the amazing hair. Check out this blog for good DIY inspiration (bonus Cinderella and Belle ideas too). I also love this skirt from Easy Cosplay Costumes paired with this Best Day Ever tank top from Amazon. Remember to add your chameleon bestie (Pascal of course).
10) Make it pink… make it blue…..make it whichever Aurora you like!
Aurora, aka Sleeping Beauty, typically is represented by pink but there was that changing dress and the fairy situation in the movei!
Add a touch of sparkle with pink glitter running shoes. Check out these custom made to order handmade costumes by BeBaGo for your next Disney princess race. I love the Aurora option she made! And Crowned Athletics as well as Sparkle athletics both have great Aurora options.
11) Set sail on a running adventure as Moana
Start with a brown running skirt, a red crop top, and a floral headband. Carry a small paddle prop for a fun finishing touch and a great photo op. I have also seen some awesome options on Etsy including this Moana-inspired tank top and matching capris.
Test your runDisney costume
Before the big day of the race, it’s important to take the time to test out your runDisney costume. Not only will this give you the opportunity to make any last-minute adjustments, but it will also make sure you can wear your runDisney costume throughout the entire race. You want to make it to that finish line in comfort and in style!
During a training session, put your costume to the test and see how it feels. Running in it will allow you to identify any potential issues that may arise during the race. Perhaps you’ll notice that your cape gets in the way or your headband keeps slipping. This trial run will give you the chance to make any necessary modifications to ensure that you’re as comfortable as possible on race day.
Remember, the main goal is to have a lot of fun and enjoy the experience of running in your Disney Princess costume- whether it be a full marathon or a 5K.
