Let’s compare Disney Animal Kingdom vs Magic Kingdom—which one is better? It depends on what you are looking for. Let’s compare and find out which Disney World park is best for you!
Ultimate Park Showdown: Disney Animal Kingdom vs Magic Kingdom
Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom are wonderful and unique in many ways, and are my two favorite parks at Walt Disney World Resort. In this blog, we will dive into the most magical features of each of these parks and who these features might appeal to. After reading this article, you will better understand which park of the two (and hopefully you can see them both) you may want to make a priority on your next Florida vacation!
Our first stop is Magic Kingdom, a staple of Disney magic since 1971. The O.G. of Walt Disney World parks boasts over 40 attractions nestled in 6 themed lands, all centered around the iconic Cinderella Castle. Journey to space on Space Mountain, explore “It’s a Small World”, visit with Ariel under the sea, or join the pirates on their Caribbean voyage in Pirates of the Caribbean. I’ll go into this in much more detail below, but Magic Kingdom offers the most variety, making it a major contender for the best Disney park title.
Animal Kingdom, meanwhile, offers a unique mix of preserving nature and wildlife, discovering other cultures and stories through amazing shows and theming, and exciting rides. Covering 500 acres and home to over 1,700+ various animals, it provides an unmatched immersion. Experience the wonder and adrenaline rush of riding on the back of your own Banshee at Avatar Flight of Passage, or go on a wild journey with Kilimanjaro Safaris. With lands dedicated to Africa and Asia, as well as the fictional but really cool Pandora, Animal Kingdom is truly a one-of-a-kind Disney park.
So, which one is best in the Animal Kingdom vs Magic Kingdom showdown? Stay with me as we explore the best rides, food, characters, and shows in each park. Together, we’ll find the place that offers the most memorable experience for you, as everyone is unique (but hopefully, you can make it to both on your next Florida vacation)
Let’s start our journey!
The Magic of Two Iconic Disney Parks: Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom
Magic Kingdom welcomed its first visitors in 1971. It was very much like Disneyland, which opened in 1965, but much bigger and with a variety of surrounding resort hotels (and room for much more). In contrast, Animal Kingdom is the newest jewel in Walt Disney World’s crown. It opened with a forward-looking approach, diverging from traditional Disney themes and diving into conservation, animal welfare and discovery, and ecological education. Despite differences in age, they both offer a magical experience.
Magic Kingdom’s six lands have diverse themes. Explore the past on Main Street, U.S.A. or the future in Tomorrowland, and there are lands for adventures and frontier explorers too. Then there’s the iconic Fantasyland, offering classic Disney touches and bringing your favorite movies and characters to life. Animal Kingdom, sprawling over 500 acres, invites you to encounter Africa, Asia, and the mesmerizing Pandora – The World of Avatar, as well as encounter wild animals in beautiful habitats and even a safari adventure.
Thrill Seekers options for both Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom
Both parks are excellent for thrill-seekers. However, at Magic Kingdom, you have more thrill ride options. These include the famed Space Mountain or the new TRON Lightcycle run, Big Thunder Mountain, Seven Dwarves Mine Train, and the brand new Tiana’s Bayou Adventure—see more detail on all of these below.
Animal Kingdom offers the thriller coaster Expedition Everest, the exciting prehistoric dash of Dinosaur, and the scenic Flight of Passage in Pandora. I love this ride and feel it’s one of the best attractions at any of the Disney Theme Parks because of the scenery and the feeling of flying, but some people feel like it’s a glorified VR experience.
Family Adventures: Animal Kingdom vs Magic Kingdom
If your adventure includes kids, both parks also offer quite a bit for them too.
At Animal Kingdom, kids and adults will love Kilimanjaro Safaris, a safari adventure through the animal preserve of Animal Kingdom. You can see giraffes, gazelles, wildebeests, and water buffalo (among other animals) roaming freely, as well as pass by a replica Pride rock and see live lions doing their thing, hippos swimming in the lake, gators, crocodiles, cheetahs, and more! Little kids love heading on the steam train to Rafiki’s Planet Watch and meeting the goats, cows, pigs, and other animals in the affection section (a sweet and animal-friendly version of a petting zoo).
They will also love Na’vi River Journey, a beautiful river boat ride through the fictional land of Pandora, as well as the incredible show, Festival of the Lion King, and fun meet and greets, including Mickey and Minnie in their safari outfits.
Meanwhile, Magic Kingdom’s classic attractions, like Peter Pan’s Flight, a fantastical flight through Neverland, it’s a Small World, a colorful boat ride exploring and celebrating children of a variety of cultures, are timeless kid favorites. Other popular family favorites include the classic ride Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Ariel’s Under the Sea Adventure, iconic character shows at Cinderella’s Castle, and too many character meet and greets to detail here!
Top Thrill Rides at Each Park
Magic Kingdom takes the lead for having more thrill ride options:
- Space Mountain: An iconic indoor coaster themed as a space journey, featuring dark tunnels, star projections, and exciting twists.
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train: A blend of leisure and speed, offering a charming tour through Snow White’s world. You can see the Seven Dwarfs at work, and then continue racing through the mines on a unique rocking coaster cart.
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: This wild-west coaster delivers in both theme and excitement, passing through a mining town at top speeds.
- Tiana’s Bayou Adventure: Formerly Splash Mountain, this newly opened log ride attraction features a 50-foot drop for thrill seekers and a lovely boat trip through the bayou for movie fans.
- TRON Lightcycle Run: This exciting indoor thrill ride is fairly new and very fast (but also very short). You ride on your very own lightcycle through the grid.
Animal Kingdom has well-themed thrill rides, just less of them. They are:
- Expedition Everest: a journey through the Himalayas where you come face to face with a Yeti and have to speed backward! Hands down, it is one of my favorite Disney coasters ever!
- Dinosaur: (which may soon become an Indiana Jones themed ride) Dinosaur is a trackless ride car adventure where you are racing to find your Dino, but you encounter many angry Dinos on the way! It is fast but not a roller coaster, and it has lots of sudden jerky movements just FYI. The thrills are more in the jump scares provided by the dinosaurs.
- Flight of Passage: This is a flight simulator-type ride you ride on the back of a banshee as you fly through the fictional world of Pandora.
Family-Friendly Attractions for All Ages
Both parks excel in family-friendly attractions, but Magic Kingdom particularly shines. It’s home to enduring Disney magic and themes that appeal to every generation.
Notable attractions include:
- Peter Pan’s Flight: A timeless dark ride offering a magical flight over London and into Neverland.
- Dumbo the Flying Elephant: A popular spinning ride that lets guests fly over Fantasyland on Dumbo.
- It’s a Small World: An iconic boat ride showcasing global unity through whimsical and colorful scenes and music.
But Animal Kingdom definitely has its share of family fun, including:
- Na’vi River Journey: Keep in mind though many kids may not have seen Avatar but they will still be delighted by the effects and theming of this boat ride through Pandora.
- Unique character meet and greets and shows with characters from The Lion King, Pocohantas, Up, and more (for more info on this keep reading)
- Dinoland: This land may be going away soon, and although adults might not appreciate it, my kids loved it when they were young! Triceratops Spin is a Dumbo-like yet Dino-themed ride for the little ones, and there’s a Dino Dig-themed playground area where kids can run wild, slide, climb, cross rope bridges, dig for Dino bones, and more!
- Wild Animal Trails: Kids LOVE Kilimanjaro Safaris and exploring wild animal trails like Gorilla Falls. The Gorillas roam through a big habitat that you can’t find at your local zoo.
- Rafiki’s Planet Watch: If your kid likes getting up close and personal with friendly animals like goats and pigs, they will love the affection section at Rafiki’s Planet Watch. If you have a little budding artist, they can learn how to be an animator at the Animation Academy inside Rafiki’s Planet Watch.
Dining options at Animal Kingdom vs Magic Kingdom
Animal Kingdom Dining
Animal Kingdom offers creative, cultural, and classic dining options. Here are some of the fan favorites available at Animal Kingdom:
- Quick Service (these are Disney’s version of fast food- walk up, order, and sit down): Satu’li Canteen is a gem of a quick service restaurant! It’s like the Chipotle of Disney Parks- offering create your own bowls that are both delicious and relatively healthy. They also offer the fan favorite Cheeseburger Pods. And close to Satu’li Canteen you can find some yummy refreshing beverages at Pongu Pongu lounge. Other Quick Service offerings worth checking out are Flame Tree Barbeque, Restaurantasaurus, and Yak and Yeti (there is a quick service and a table service, which are both good).
- Lounge/table service: Animal Kingdom is home to my, and many other guests’, favorite lounge, Nomad Lounge. Delicious churros, small plates, and crafty cocktails are just some of the awesome options here! They offer a walk-up waitlist, so you can usually get a seat, but maybe not right away, and a comfy chair riverside. I also love Dawa Bar just outside Tusker House for a drink with a view and great entertainment when the bands are playing.
- Table Service Restaurant: Tiffin’s is a great option, but my personal favorite table service restaurant is also a character meal. I love Tusker House, an African-inspired buffet-style restaurant that is home to Mickey, Daisy, Donald, and Goofy as safari adventurers. They offer cultural and unique foods but have some traditional buffet fare for kiddos and less adventurous eaters.
Magic Kingdom Dining
- Quick Service: Columbia Harbour House offers a great assortment of seafood dishes, fish and chicken platters, plant-based options like the plant based mushroom roll. They had a great plant based crab option but looks like it’s off the menu now. Sleepy Hollow Inn is another great option for breakfast with their waffle sandwiches in a variety of yummy and seasonal flavors. You can get some decent Tex-Mex style dishes at Pecos Bills Tall Tale Cafe (which may be rethemed to a New Orleans Style quick service restaurant soon), and many quick service classic options like Cheeseburger and Fries in Tomorrowland.
- Table Service: Though Magic Kingdom doesn’t have lounges like Animal Kingdom, there are some great sit-down restaurant options ranging from fun character meals with the Winnie the Pooh Characters at Crystal Palace or the Disney Princesses at Cinderella’s Royal Table, Adventurous eats at the Jungle Cruise Skipper Canteen, to fancy French Cuisine at Be Our Guest (oh and it’s in the Beast’s castle…no big deal)!
Iconic Treats and Snacks
Disney parks are known for some iconic snacks. At Magic Kingdom, the Dole Whip is a popular treat, and Aloha Isle has this classic non-dairy and vegan treat available plain or in a tasty float option. Mickey-shaped pretzels and Adventureland’s cheeseburger spring rolls are also hard to resist. And new to Walt Disney World now that Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is open will be beignets (or should I say man-catchin’ beignets to quote Tiana).
Disney’s Animal Kingdom park offers unique snacks, like Pongu Lumpia, the Night Blossom drink with boba, Grilled Corn on the Cob at Harmabe Fruit Market, and delicious churros at Nomad Lounge.
Both parks, Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, offer a wide variety of meals to suit all preferences. Whether you prefer quick service, character dining, or iconic snacks, there’s something for everyone.
Shows at Animal Kingdom vs Magic Kingdom
Disney parks know how to put on a show, and the shows at Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom are no exception.
Animal Kingdom Shows
- The Festival of the Lion King is a great time! The show features incredible costumes (think a mini version of The Lion King on Broadway), dancers, songs, and some of your favorite characters from The Lion King, including Simba, Timon, and Pumba. Each section of the show theater gets its own “host,” who sings and performs in the show and gets the crowd excited and participating in the show. They lead a parade of chosen kids in a song and dance on the stage, and the music is incredible. There are tumbling acrobatic monkeys, an amazing ballet scene, and even an incredible fire eater. In my opinion, this is the best live stage show in any of the Disney World parks.
- Feathered Friends in Flight is a perfect show for the animal/bird lover in your group and it’s great for kids and adults alike. Trained birds of all varieties work with animal trainers/behavioralist and you learn about the birds while you watch them do some pretty cool moves!
- Finding Nemo the Big Blue and Beyond is a retelling of Finding Nemo (but shorter) featuring live stage performers, dramatic backdrops, and puppets (sort of) that will blow you away with their design. It features favorite songs like “In the Big Blue World” and “Go with the Flow.”
- Tree of Life Awakenings show- if you visit Animal Kingdom during the winter months, head over to Discovery Island after dark to experience the Tree of Life Awakenings Show. This show happens every 10 minutes and features the gorgeous tree of life animals coming to life like fireflies, does, fox, hummingbirds, and more. Sometimes, Animal Kingdom has special Awakenings shows featuring the Lion King or medleys of various classic Disney movies and music. The Tree of Life also has a show featuring the free-flying birds of Disney who are set loose and make their way over Discovery Island to land on the iconic Tree.
- And speaking of after-dark awesomeness at Animal Kingdom..if you are there during the winter, definitely head over to Pandora the World of Avatar after dark to experience the wonder of blues and purple lights and glow that is Pandora at night. It’s a must-see!
Magic Kingdom Shows
- Fireworks Shows- if fireworks are your thing, then Magic Kingdom will definitely be the winner for you as Animal Kingdom does not have a firework show (the animals would not appreciate it) or even a nighttime show anymore (except for Awakenings during certain times of the year). The current fireworks show at Magic Kingdom is Happily Ever After, and it is by far my favorite of all of Magic Kingdom’s fireworks shows- it’s a must-see!
- Castle Shows- throughout the day, you can see Mickey, Minnie, and many of your favorite Disney characters on stage in front of the castle. These castle shows feature singing and dancing and boosts the magic factor of Magic Kingdom in a major way. There’s just something about seeing your favorite Disney characters come to life in front of Cinderella’s Castle that brings out the kid in all of us!
- Shows/Attractions—There are many at Magic Kingdom. I love Carousel of Progress for its nostalgia, Tiki Room for the songs and dad jokes made by bird animatronics, Hall of Presidents for its history lessons, and Monsters Inc Laugh Floor for, again, dad jokes, but this time, Monsters are the comedians!
Characters at Animal Kingdom vs Magic Kingdom
While both of these parks have characters, you will find more of the classic Disney character meet-and-greets and shows at Magic Kingdom. By classic, I mean Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and the various Disney Princesses, to name a few.
Though Animal Kingdom doesn’t have all of the classic characters, there are places to meet Mickey and Minnie (see above), and they do have unique characters like Kevin, the bird from Up, who roams freely around the park. Other Up characters like Dug, Russell, and Mr. Frederickson have a meet-and-greet, too. You can also meet Timon from The Lion King and sometimes even Pocohantas and Meeko!
Choosing between these two iconic Disney parks should consider your party’s preferences, including:
- What ages are you traveling with? If you are traveling with toddlers and young children who are very attached to classic Disney characters and stories, then Magic Kingdom may be a better choice. It’s also the better choice for someone who has never rarely been to a Disney park but enjoys iconic Disney movies and theming.
- Are you traveling with Animal Lovers? If so, Animal Kingdom is your best bet. But don’t think this is just a “zoo”—it’s so much more! Animal Kingdom is a 500-acre world filled with more than 1,700 animals. These creatures hail from diverse regions worldwide, with natural habitats, a safari, and winding animal trails!
- Any foodies in your party? That’s a tough one, but, in my opinion, Animal Kingdom has better and more creative food. Magic Kingdom has more classic theme park fare and food options in general. Of course, this will vary based on your food preferences.
- Thrill seekers? See the sections above. Since Magic Kingdom has more attractions in general, it does have more thrill rides available, but Animal Kingdom has one of my favorite coasters ever—Expedition Everest—so again, it’s a difficult decision.
Planning Your Visit: Tips and Tricks
Planning ahead is crucial for Disney World. Follow these key tips to ensure a memorable trip. They will make your adventure more magical, whether you’re at Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom.
Best Times to Visit Each Park
Timing your visit to Disney World can make your trip less stressful. If you have flexibility in your schedule try to choose times when kids are in school.
Off-peak seasons mean smaller crowds and shorter waits. Magic Kingdom is best visited in late January to early March and mid-August to early October (though the second week of October many schools now have fall break), avoiding holidays.
For Animal Kingdom, aim for May or September. Often, the dates mentioned for Magic Kingdom off-peak also apply to Animal Kingdom. Picking the right time to go means more fun and less waiting.
Utilizing Disney Lightning Lanes
As of later this month (July of 2024) Disney will be changing its Genie Plus system to Lightning Lane Plus. Both the old and the new systems let you skip regular lines at certain attractions. Using this service, you can choose favorite rides throughout the day.
This new version, however, will allow you to pick one tier 1 and 2 tier 2 attractions ahead of your trip if you purchase the paid Multipass Lightning Lane Plus. The individual lightning lane service is staying the same but changing its name to Lightning Lane Single Pass. This service includes the most popular ride(s) at each park and allows you to pay just for that ride one time during your visit that day.
I will have more to come on these changes on the blog but see more info now on this blog from Travel and Leisure.
Accommodations and Transportation Options
Disney offers a wide range of places to stay, fitting every budget. From affordable Value Resorts to deluxe options, you’ll find your ideal spot. Staying on-site offers perks like free park transport, early Lightning Lane access, and longer park hours.
Disney also makes getting around easy with free buses, monorails, and boats. For more freedom, you can rent a car or use services like Uber and Lyft. Or Disney World has its own Lyft service called Minnie Vans, which can get you even closer to the park but only for Magic Kingdom; see more on this service here.
Disney cast members are there to make your experience special, whether you’re enjoying thrilling rides or classic attractions at any of the Disney World Parks, including both Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom. But for some reason it always seems to me the Disney Cast Members at Animal Kingdom are a bit more relaxed, likely because it’s not quite as crazy crowded there (usually).
The Verdict: Which Park Reigns Supreme?
Choosing the top Disney World park, whether Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom, is a personal decision. It depends on what you love. Both offer unique experiences, and it depends on what you like to do, what your travel party likes to do and experience, and how you like to travel.
Magic Kingdom, established in 1971, embodies the true essence of Disney with its magic. It features beloved characters and iconic rides in its six themed lands, which include Main Street U.S.A., Adventureland, Frotneirland, Liberty Square, and Tomorrowland. Each provides something special, from the enchantment of Peter Pan’s Flight to the happy haunts of Haunted Mansion to the rush of Space Mountain. It’s ideal for those craving classic Disney charm.
On the flip side, Animal Kingdom covers over 500 acres and combines wildlife, thrilling rides, immersive environments, and theming. It houses over 1,700 animals and is great for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. The park’s sections include Africa, Asia, Discovery Island, and the stunning Pandora—The World of Avatar. Here, you can enjoy the thrill of Expedition Everest or be in awe of the park’s icon—the Tree of Life. Animal Kingdom is a truly unique Disney experience.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Between Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom
- Age and interests of your travel group
- Desired theme park experience (classic Disney magic vs. wildlife and nature)
- Attraction preferences (thrill rides, family-friendly rides, animal encounters)
- Available time for your visit (Magic Kingdom will take more time; to do it right, I recommend two days. Animal Kingdom can be seen in less than one full day, but I recommend a full day).
Both Parks in One Day?
It would be impossible to truly see everything at both Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom in one day, but if you planned ahead, rope-dropped, and used the line-skipping service, you could see some of the best parts of both parks in one day.
Here are some tips to help you be more efficient in your Disney World adventure:
- Download and familiarize yourself with the My Disney Experience app before you go. You will use this app for almost everything you do at Disney World.
- Start your day early to avoid the crowds and enjoy top rides first
- Use shorter wait times during parades and shows to your advantage
- Book dining spots early to skip long queues and prevent hunger frustrations
- Plan for breaks to relax and recharge during the day
- Meet Disney characters at both parks for unforgettable photo ops.
